MARQUETTE - The U.P. 200 Sled Dog Championships will
likely be the topic of an episode of "Timeless," an
ESPN2 documentary series which airs on Saturdays. Crews
from Red Line Films of New York are capturing the sled
dog race on film.
On Friday, the film crew was busy shooting pre-race
footage - everything from city public works crews
dumping tons of snow on Washington Street to
veterinarians checking all the dogs during the mandatory
vet check. "They look over every dog from end to end,
making sure each is happy and healthy," said Jim Warren,
an Iditarod racer who's son Christopher is taking his
first shot at a long distance run this weekend. "You've
got to remember that these dogs run for 260 miles. They
check for sore muscles, their heart and lung conditions.
It's really thorough."
Christopher helped his dad take part in the Alaskan
Iditarod and this year his father is helping his son in
the U.P. 200. The two have just finished jointly
writing, "Following My Father's Dream," a book about
their trail-side relationship.
"He helped me train in Newberry before last year's
Iditarod. Once the race was on, he hitchhiked by bush
plane to help our team at the checkpoints along the
way," Warren said. "He started keeping up the race
journals on our Web site, which led to the book."
These, and likely several other sub-stories, will
emerge from the ESPN Original Entertainment production.
ESPN touts that the show "will highlight some of the
sports world's true hidden gems.... 'Timeless' will span
the globe to highlight towns and communities with unique
sports stories all their own." |
